Tacalcitol Uses Tacalcitol is used in the treatment of psoriasis.
How it Works
How Tacalcitol works Tacalcitol is a derivative of vitamin D₃ and belongs to a class of drugs known as antipsoriatics. It binds to the keratinocyte vitamin D receptor to the same extent as natural vitamin D₃. It functions by normalizing cell growth and development in the skin, preventing the excessive growth rate of skin cells that leads to the scaling characteristic of psoriasis.
Expert Advice
- Avoid contact with eyes. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Inform your doctor if you have or have had:
- Kidney problems
- A specific type of psoriasis called generalized pustular psoriasis
- High doses of vitamin D
- If tacalcitol is to be used in conjunction with UV treatment:
- Administer UV radiation in the morning
- Apply tacalcitol at bedtime
- Notify your doctor if you are:
- Pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- Breastfeeding
- Do not use if you are allergic to tacalcitol or any of its ingredients.
- Do not use if you have high levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia).
