How Prochlorperazine Works Prochlorperazine is a dopamine antagonist. Dopamine regulates the area in the brain responsible for nausea and vomiting, and this medication blocks dopamine's action. The mechanism by which neuroleptics like Prochlorperazine relieve headaches is likely related to their action as dopamine D2 receptor antagonists. Additionally, it has an antipsychotic effect by inhibiting dopamine activity, which also influences thoughts and mood, providing relief from short-term anxiety as well.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Prochlorperazine include dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions), akathisia (inability to stay still), parkinsonism, tardive dyskinesia, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), agitation, and convulsions.
