How Ammonium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Diphenhydramine, Menthol, and Chloroform Work Ammonium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Diphenhydramine, Menthol, and Chloroform is a combination of four medicines: Ammonium Chloride, Sodium Citrate, Diphenhydramine, and Menthol, which relieve cough. Ammonium Chloride and Sodium Citrate aid in the removal of mucus (phlegm) from the airways. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine that alleviates allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Menthol creates a sensation of coolness and helps relieve minor throat irritation.

Side Effects
